Let's set up how your traffic leaves the internet
Atlas can send different kinds of your traffic out from different locations — everyday browsing, work apps, sensitive sites like your bank, and anything else you name. This takes a few minutes: four short questions, one per kind of traffic. You'll see exactly what changes before anything is saved.
Skipping sends everyday traffic through your default location and leaves everything else exactly as it is.
Most of your everyday browsing
This is where most of your traffic will appear to come from — general browsing, streaming, and anything you haven't set a specific rule for below. Nothing in the next few steps changes this; they only add exceptions on top of it.
One dedicated location for work apps
If you use specific apps for work — email, video calls, internal tools — you can send just that traffic through one location, kept separate from everyday traffic. Unlike Everyday: if this location stops working, Atlas stops that traffic instead of quietly switching it elsewhere — your work apps lose connection until it's fixed, they don't fall back unprotected. If none of this applies to you, choose "Your real connection" below — that's the same as not setting a Work rule at all.
Sites that should always look the same to the outside world
Some sites — your bank, government services — work best when they always see you coming from one deliberate location. Add one row per type of sensitive site: give it a name (e.g. "My bank"), pick a category — a pre-built list of real sites Atlas already recognizes, so you don't have to list them yourself — and choose where that traffic should appear to come from. This never uses your real connection; the whole point is a consistent, deliberate location.
A single site or app that needs its own rule
Use this for one website or app that needs its own rule. Pick a known service from the list, or choose "Custom" to type an address (e.g. netflix.com) — then choose where that traffic should go. A rule combining more than one known service, or mixing a known service with a typed address, isn't editable in this step yet — it's left exactly as it is.
